How to use this programme

Harmony4Life Progressive Relaxation is unique as it is broken down into five phases.  The purpose of this step-by-step process is to allow you time to master each phase before moving on to the next.  To start with you should aim to cover one phase per week and listen to this at least once a day, along with the breathing techniques track. 

 

Once you have completed this initial five week programme, it can be used daily or just in times of high stress and anxiety.  You can use the different tracks to focus on specific areas of the body, if you are short on time, or just want to relax a single area and reduce stress. 

 

You can focus on the lower body using track 3, upper body using track 4, neck and shoulders using track 5 or head and face using track 6.  Alternatively you can use track 7 to cover the whole body.

70 minutes of simple and well paced yoga relaxation techniques; it includes a guide for diaphragmatic breathing and an introduction to help you get the most out of the programme:

You cannot be relaxed and anxious at the same time...

In the 1920s, an American Doctor, Edmund Jacobson developed the first series of active progressive relaxation exercises for treating chronic stress and tension.  He was quoted as saying, "An anxious mind cannot exist in a relaxed body."  These progressive relaxation methods are now often used at the end of Yoga sessions to completely release tension. 

 

Most of us unconsciously tense our muscles when feeling stressed and in response to other emotions such as anger, frustration and fear.  This wastes a lot of energy and leads not only to stiffness and perhaps pain but also to tiredness and reduced functional ability.

 

Similarly, muscles that are tense over a long time shorten and lay down supporting fibres to maintain tension.  This means they cannot function as they would if they were loose, elastic and free. 

 

By learning how to release locked muscles and tension, using guided relaxation therapy, movement becomes easier and energy is more effectively used.  With regular practise the techniques will become easier to acquire and will become an invaluable tool for life, which you can use anywhere at anytime.
