About Harmony4Life Progressive
Relaxation
Use this programme to learn an easy method of
relaxing your muscles more and more quickly. You will be guided
through tensing and relaxing the major muscle groups in your body,
as well as diaphragmatic breathing.
Harmony4Life
Progressive Relaxation will result in an increased awareness of the
parts of your body that are prone to tension. It will
teach you to distinguish between tension and relaxation for the
whole body and how to release
any tension.
In your daily life this will result in being able to tense one
muscle group whilst keeping the rest of your body as relaxed as
possible, which will lead to reduced tension and more energy.
Amongst other
benefits,
progressive relaxation techniques are
proven by research to
significantly improve alertness and reduce anxiety (Thomas et al,
2000*).
The diaphragmatic
breathing exercise is designed to help you breathe from your stomach
and clear your mind. Relaxing the
diaphragm, through diaphragmatic breathing, has numerous benefits
including more energy, clearer thinking, reduced stress, anxiety and
fatigue.

How to use this programme
Harmony4Life Progressive Relaxation is unique as it is
broken down into five phases.
The purpose of this step-by-step process is to allow you time to
master each phase before moving on to the next. To start
with you should aim to cover one phase per week and listen to this
at least once a day, along with the diaphragmatic breathing track.
Once you have completed this initial five week
programme, it can be used daily or just in times of high stress and
anxiety. You can use the different tracks to focus on specific
areas of the body, if you are short on time, or just want to relax a
single area.
You can focus on the lower body using track 3,
upper body using track 4, neck and shoulders using track 5 or head
and face using track 6. Alternatively you can use track 7 to cover
the whole body.

More feedback
Customers often
prefer this relaxation technique to hypnosis or meditation as they
are not
passive and do not have to rely on their ability to quieten the mind
or imagine
certain things; instead it distracts the mind away from unwanted
thoughts by actively engaging the user.
“I have tried many different hypnosis CDs for
stress management and have found that they just wind me up. My mind
wanders elsewhere and I struggle with imagining what I am told to
and then just get irritated when I am told ‘you are relaxing
deeper’; this is exactly what I need as I find my mind is
distracted from any worries as I get more and more relaxed as I
follow the instructions for each exercise. Even the breathing track
has worked for me- wow. This programme really is quite unique, thanks.”
“I’m getting a lot out of your Progressive
Relaxation programme. I have monitored my stress levels since I
started and have seen them fall dramatically. The bit that works
best for me is that having a choice of five different tracks less
than 10 minutes long means I have no excuse not to use at least one track
daily. I find this time out really rebalances everything for me, I feel
completely relaxed and revitalised afterwards."
"You
asked for feedback on how I got on, so I thought it may be useful
for you to know that I use different tracks on different days
depending on whether I feel my head needs relaxing due to too much
thinking/ frowning or when my neck and shoulders need some attention
after sitting at the computer all day. This has really worked for
me."
"The best thing about this programme is being
able to use it in my lunch hour during my working day- working in a
sedentary role I need something like this, especially when I’ve had
a stressful morning and feel wound up by my boss again! It has so
many uses for me I vow to use it for the rest of my days, its a
lifesaver when I'm feeling frustrated or anxious and things just get
too much!”
“Everyone I have recommended this to loves it.
This is surely a must for all!”
“Ultimately the programme was really good and totally worked as I
slept like a baby afterwards and have been feeling great all day (+
swam a mile which I haven't done for some time). Just quickly though
here's some feedback....generally I'm uncomfortable with this sort
of thing, not sure why. However, once I'd got used to the backing
track I really got into it.
The
best thing was that it was really simple and set the progressive
relaxation exercises at a really good pace, i.e. not too rushed or
too prolonged. The script was good as there was no embellishment,
and your voice is really soothing and comforting/ unpretenscious.
Thanks so much for letting me know about this, it is something I use
regularly now to de-stress and revitalise.”
"Wow, I used your CD
and it was absolutely magnificent. I've never come across
anything like it before and had no idea it was going to be so
effective. I tried it at work and was amazed that I fell
asleep after...for two hours- I didn't leave work until 8pm!!! I really feel it's the answer
I've been looking for to help me with managing stress and having
relaxation time.
I need this so much as
I run a very demanding business and get so embroiled in the fine
detail, I have been known to work 12-14 hour days consecutively.
I have even got to the point where I can feel my pulse racing, hands
shaking and even my eyes are twitching.
After using the CD just
the once at work I then practiced what I'd learnt
before I went to sleep. Normally I don't sleep that well,
which I have just got used to- every night I am just all over the
place. After using those techniques I was amazed to wake up
the next day in exactly the same position that I had gone to sleep
in. I will definitely make time to use this CD regularly.
I have used other relaxation techniques before, such as when you
imagine feeling relaxed and they just haven't worked."

More information
You cannot be relaxed
and anxious at the same time...
Jacobson developed the first series of active
progressive relaxation exercises for treating chronic stress and
tension. He was quoted as saying, "An anxious mind cannot exist in
a relaxed body."
Most of us unconsciously tense our muscles when
feeling stressed and in response to other emotions such as anger,
frustration and fear. This wastes a lot of energy and leads not
only to stiffness and perhaps pain but also to tiredness and reduced
functional ability.
Similarly, muscles that are tense over a long
time shorten and lay down supporting fibres to maintain tension.
This means they cannot function as they would if they were loose,
elastic and free.
By learning how to release locked muscles and
tension, using progressive relaxation, movement becomes easier and
energy is more effectively used. With regular practise the
techniques will become easier to acquire and will become an
invaluable tool for life, which you can use anywhere at anytime.
